The Types Of Asphalt Used In Driveway Paving

paving types

There are 2 types of asphalt mixes that are commonly used in paving driveways by professional contractors like Biondi Paving in Sacramento, CA. There’s the 41A type, which is also known as the “driveway mix”, and the 41B type.

The 41A asphalt mix is a material that is composed of asphalt oil and rock. And this asphalt is what contractors commonly use during driveway paving projects. The crushed rocks being used are very fine, and sand is also added into the mixture to produce a smoother surface. The oil acts as the binding material to combine the rocks and sand. More asphalt oil is added to the mixture if you want to have a more durable asphalt pavement. There is only one setback though, and that is tire marks will be left when vehicles will pass through the asphalt.

On the other hand, the 41B asphalt mix is comprised of larger sized rocks and sand combined with the asphalt oil. The way the ingredients are mixed is similar to 41A mix, but there is less oil used. And once applied, it will produce a less smooth surface but can bear heavier weights up to 1 ton.

The type of asphalt mix to be applied will usually depend on how you are utilizing your driveway. To be specific, if your driveway is holding heavier vehicles for most of the time, then you’ll need to have the 41B mix for added durability. Of course, the surface may be rougher, but it will definitely be strong and durable. Hence, it is recommended if you own a truck, trailer, or a boat.

But if you own lighter vehicles and you’re aiming for a smoother surface, then the 41A mix is the right choice.

How Is It Used?

There are 3 types of asphalt paving work that can be done:

  1. Full-Depth Reclamation – This is where the entire existing asphalt surface is ground off down to the base material. The base is then graded and compacted, and a new asphalt material is placed on top.
  2. Patching – This is where sections of the asphalt pavement are removed and replaced with new asphalt.
  3. Overlay – This is where a new layer of asphalt is placed over the existing asphalt surface.

Why Asphalt?

There are many reasons why asphalt is the perfect choice for paving jobs on your driveway, and here are some of them:

Durable – Asphalt is made with a combination of sand, gravel, and tar. And these ingredients work together to create a tough surface that can withstand traffic and damage.

Versatile – It can be used for a variety of applications. This means that it can be applied to fit any surface whether it’s a driveway, parking lot, or road.

Easy To Maintain – All you need is a simple sweep or hose down to keep it looking great.

Low Cost – Asphalt is one of the most affordable paving materials available.
